The most common bacteria involved in dental infections are Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis. These bacteria play a major role in tooth decay and gum disease.

Streptococcus mutans is the primary culprit behind cavities. It feeds on sugars from food and produces acid that weakens tooth enamel, leading to decay. If the decay isn’t treated, it can progress deeper into the tooth, eventually causing pain, infection, and abscess formation. Bacterial infections in the mouth, like those caused by Streptococcus mutans or Porphyromonas gingivalis, can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Azithromycin 500 mg is sometimes prescribed to treat severe dental infections by targeting and reducing harmful bacteria.

Porphyromonas gingivalis, on the other hand, is strongly linked to gum infections like gingivitis and periodontitis. It triggers inflammation in the gums, which can lead to bleeding, gum recession, and bone loss around the teeth if left untreated.

Dental infections are usually caused by a mix of bacteria rather than just one type. These bacteria thrive in plaque — a sticky film that forms on teeth — which is why good oral hygiene is so important. Brushing twice a day, flossing, and regular dental checkups help control bacterial growth and prevent infections from developing or spreading.
